To provide emergency shelter, crisis intervention, counseling and support services to women and children who are victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and to draw public attention to the devastating consequences of these acts of violence.

This organization began operation as the Rape Crisis Line of Grayson County on March 1, 1976. Prior to that time, a few women in the area researched the problems associated with rape victims in Grayson County and programs operating in other communities. After receiving training, these women recruited others and trained them in giving support to victims of sexual assault.

In January 1979, the Rape Crisis Line changed its name to the Women's Crisis Line of Grayson County and expanded its services to provide emotional support and crisis intervention counseling to victims of family violence.

In March 1982, the WCL received grant funds from the Texas Department of Health, Emergency Health Services to operate the victim assistance and public education portion of the line's services.

In September 1983, the WCL acquired a house to provide a shelter for battered women as well as office space. Additional funding from the Department of Human Services made it possible to hire additional staff.

In 1986, we changed our name to the Crisis Center and moved to a still larger location to meet our growing needs.

In July 1987, we opened a branch office in Bonham to serve Fannin County. In 1989, a volunteer program began offering services to men who batter.

In October 2002, we reached a major milestone. Mr. Chester Brown issued a challenge grant of $250,000.00 toward the construction of a new facility. Within, six months, the Board of Directors, thanks to foundations, board members, local businesses, corporations and individuals, met that challenge. Within six more months the remainder of the funds needed to construct the facility were raised.

In October 2004, our dream became a reality and we began providing services in our current facility - a facility designed specifically to meet the needs of survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.

The Crisis Center continues to operate as an independent, non-profit organization, dedicated to providing support to victims of family violence and sexual assault.
